 decent windows and doors
Hello! I'm going to be building a house on the 2nd row of the beach area. During my time here in the Yucatan, I have noticed that most of the windows and doors are very poorly built. The aluminum is very thin, the glass even more so. If someone whispers outside it is heard inside. The build quality is very poor to the point that almost all of them leak when it rains, and sliding windows rattle in even the slightest breeze. Has anyone found decent windows here without breaking the bank? Thank you very much!

 Re: decent windows and doors
Unfortunately you are right; most of the windows are poor quality. Especially at the beach where most of the owners spend only couple of months there at the most, it doesn’t make since to spend lot of money on the windows. All the windows I have seen are custom made and most of them are lousy. There are couple of companies which manufacture nice and solid looking windows with materials imported directly from Florida, but their windows cost about twice as much as the local production. Another thing to consider is the weather: constant salt spray will speed up deterioration of the frame and robber seals, paint will start pealing after about 3 years, wind and flying sand will destroy all the plastic rollers in less than couple of years. Having all those experiences in my own beach house I am glad I have cheap windows which I will have to replace every 5-6 years. If you are interesting let me know and I will email you with their telephone numbers.

New types of aluminum windows with build in louvers are already available in Yucatan. I have seen them installed in Chelem and Telchac. Those windows are supposed to be hurricane proof and cost roughly twice as much as regular aluminum windows.

Cheers for the replies! I would love any and all information regarding window makes and contact info. Has anyone used Durman windows before? Their products look good on their website, but I'd love to see them up close. I'm going to be living in the house 90% of the year so I want to make informed decisions.

If you are in Telchac check out Jan & Juanita’s home, they have interesting new windows there. What I like about it is that those windows have window shatters incorporated into the window frame. Additional protection against the element as well as theft. Slightly more expensive but worth it in my opinion.
