Post Centro Construction Renovation
Hello,
We are buying a 3 bedroom (2,000 Sq Ft) house in Centro which will require renovation. The house is structurally sound and will require some cosmetic renovations, along with new doors, tiles, painting, etc. In addition we will completely renovate the kitchen and two bathrooms and will add a simple terraced roof and concrete slab with tiles in the rear. All electrical and plumbing will need to be replaced or added within the existing mamposteria walls. Also, the front elevation will be restored to its original look by adding a door opening which was blocked up at some point and demolishing a rather unappealing rock application. The roof will need to be water proofed but is other wise in good condition. We will also be demolishing a 200 Sq Ft terrace, as well as the existing large water holding tank. A 10 x 20 ft pool will be added, but otherwise we will have very little new construction.
We realize this is somewhat of an open ended question, but can anyone provide us with a ball park cost for renovations? Also, If anyone has contractor recommendations, as well as landscaping stores (we would like to landscape the property ourselves), it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Merida Bound.

Hi and Welcome
It looks like you are about to engage in nice size project.
If it comes to recommendation: There are a fair number of good construction professionals, large number of self proclaimed construction experts and some numbers of crooks in Merida.
Unfortunately, large portion of information posted on local blogs, guides and forums are misleading or promoting friends or people who are paying for it. The best way is to investigate with actual owners, people who had construction done on their properties and there are plenty of those in Merida. Old fashioned common sense works and is highly recommended in this part of the world as well.
You won’t have any problems with landscaping, there are several large and well stocked nurseries in town and everything grows like crazy here.

Thanks for the quick reply, makes sense. Would you happen to know the names or locations of the plant nurseries. We are still unfamiliar with areas outside of Centro.
Thanks for your help.

There are several (four or five) large nurseries along the “Periferico” in Merida Norte, between calle 32 and Motul highway 178, all of them located on the north side of the “Periferico”. In colonia Mexico on calle 19 you have “Vivero Jardín Jurásico” with good selection of exotic palm trees and cycads.
My favorite, large nurseries right on the border line between Yucatan and Campeche, huge selection with lot better prices than in Merida, (you don’t mind 1 hour of travel). New vivero on the south side of Motul highway just before village of Baca.
In Merida, you will also find countless numbers of small nurseries with good selection of plants. If you like planting, you won't be disappointed in Yucatan’s climate or plants availability – guaranteed.

I couldn't possibly agree more with Adam on that point. From my sad personal experiences, I would also add some real estate agents and lawyers to this category and advise - to stay away from their recommendations.
