Post Solar panels and wind turbines in Yucatan, are they worth it
Hi
For the first 2 ½ years in our beach place in Ixtampu we had only electricity that we were producing with our 500w wind turbine. Since, I was not to happy with the high prices we were offered to be connected to the grid, filing personal aversion to CFE, and love of turbines, batteries, cables, convertors and all the gages, an idea of creating my own electricity was very appealing to me. This modest and primitive system we had, was working great, most of the time. With time, I had to devote more and more time to maintenance and constant cleaning of all the components because of the salt spray in the air. After couple of years, we decided to build 2nd casita on this property, and at that moment I decided to make my pace with CFE and get connected. I am in favor of innovations, independence of having my own power supply, but reality of the cost per kW, maintenance and time I had to devote to not always reliable system, convinced me to go back to the grid.
Therefore, answer to your question is, Yes.
If you are located in the remote area without other possibilities. Yes
If you are trying to save the earth. Yes
If you hate the CFE. Yes
If you are willing to pay more per kW. Yes
If you have lots of time to perform all the maintenance. Yes
I think that solar panels, wind turbines or hybrids have a very bright future ahead, and commercially they proved to be a grate success. Unfortunately, for a successful household application of those systems, we will have to wait a little. But at the same time, home solar panels and turbines are great gadgets and lots of fun to have, and I would encourage everyone who likes to experiment and produce his own electricity, to get one.

Good Luck
Adam
