What's the difference between a saltwater pool and a pool maintained with packaged chlorine?

There are some pretty distinct differences between the two. Salt water might have some advantages with the heat in this area. Chlorine can get eaten up pretty fast in the heat and sun. Is there any type of above gound pools in this area? I'm assuming that most pools are in ground.
